SYMPTOMS

Factors such as narrow, hairy or obstructed ear canals, hearing aid or earplug use, as well as dusty/dirty occupations all contribute to a build-up of ear wax and using cotton buds only serves to push the debris back in further, often impacting the wax in the process.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, wax could be the culprit:

  • Hearing loss

  • Ear ache or the sensation of blocked ears

  • Ears ringing or buzzing (Tinnitus)

  • Vertigo

MICROSUCTION

Microsuction is a procedure that involves the use of a Video Otoscope to view the ear canal and drum with high precision, combined with a gentle suction device to remove the ear wax. Unlike other ear wax removal methods, microsuction does not involve inserting liquids into the ear, making it less messy and reducing the risk of infection.

We specialise in microsuction because it provides immediate relief with minimal risk, making it a preferred choice for many patients and ear care professionals.

IRRIGATION or ‘SYRINGING’

Another effective method we utilise is ear irrigation, a tried-and-true technique that gently flushes out excess wax using a controlled stream of water.

Ear irrigation is a procedure that involves the use of a specialized syringe filled with a warm, sterile water solution to gently cleanse the ear canal. This method is particularly useful for softening and removing layers of ear wax that have built up over time.

PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

Before your visit it is important that you follow these steps to reduce the possibility of unsuccessful wax removal:

  1. Purchase OLIVE OIL based ear drops or spray such as Earol or Cl-ear - available on our online store

  2. Tilt your head to the side or lie down and place 1-2 doses of the drops or spray in your ear. Leave to soak for 5-10 minutes.

  3. Repeat on the other side.

  4. DO NOT place any cotton wool or cotton buds into the ear. It is normal for excess oil to run out of the ear, a tissue can be used to wipe around the outside of the ear.

  5. Repeat for 5-7 days leading up to your appointment.

Please note: If you have a perforated ear drum, repeated infections, have had operations or any other medical intervention in your ears, please check with your wax specialist before following these steps.
