Meet The Team At The Honiton Hearing Centre

Colin Eaton

The current clinical lead, he and sam founded the Honiton Hearing Centre in 2002 s a development from his original home-visit business. Colin is a Registered Hearing Aid dispenser, who originally qualified in 1999, and undertook a further degree in Hearing Aid Audiology in 2010, he also qualified in basic and advanced clinical ear care using irrigation and or Micro-suction at Aston University in 2011. He has been removing wax, carrying out hearing tests and prescribing hearing systems at the Centre ever since.

He is a former Fellow of BSHAA, and downgraded his fellowship to Full Member due to time constraints when he became the National Chairman of AIHHP in 2017. Colin partnered the business with Andrew Bird Hearing last year and both businesses are proud to be part of the BSHAA customer care scheme.

Colin doesn’t get much spare time, but enjoys driving, the outdoors, reading and watching “anything to do with engines” on TV. He also enjoys dining out, being with family and eating cake, sometimes coupling everything together to visit his eldest daughter in Scotland.

Colin Says; “although I enjoy my job, I recognised that we needed to provide ongoing care for our clients as we got older, and when Andy approached us about becoming a sister company to his, we thought it was an excellent idea and having signed a new lease and expanded our workforce, that has proved to be a good move.”

Andrew Bird

Andy is the managing director of the Honiton Hearing Centre and has been great friends with Colin for over 20 years. He qualified as a Hearing Aid Audiologist in 2003 and followed that with basic and advanced clinical ear care courses to qualify to remove wax and enhance his scope of practice in 2010. Andy formed his own Company “Andrew Bird Hearing” in 2007, and his passion for best quality service and product is closely aligned with Colin and Sam’s ethos, which led him to purchase the company from Colin and Sam in June 2022, and added this as a sister company to his own. Since this time, he has expanded the staff at the Centre and is looking to expand the hearing care provision still further using Honiton as a base.

When away from work he enjoys watching rugby and occasionally still plays (although as an ex- first team player the joints creak a bit the day after!) He says “my passion for cake and a full English outweighs my ability to play well these days!” Away from sport he enjoys spending time with his young family and visiting the countryside for walks.

Andy says, “Running Honiton Hearing Centre alongside my own Hearing Company has been very easy, as Colin and Sam’s attitude aligns with my own, I am looking forward to an exciting time for Honiton Hearing Centre going forwards, and I look forward to meeting old and new clients alike.”

Alana Shapter

Alana is a degree qualified Audiologist and hearing aid dispenser, who qualified in 2021 and subsequently worked for a high street chain. Whilst studying for her degree, she undertook further advanced modules in clinical ear care and wax removal. Alana has joined the audiology team and she; Colin and Andy are now looking to develop the practice further.

Away from work Alana is kept busy with her 2 children, and at weekends she is often found walking or supporting various children’s sports activities! She enjoys driving and “anything outside” and with a partner who is a chef – eating out (and in if he’s cooking!!)

Alana says “I’m very excited to be part of a great team, who’s focus on customer care aligns with my own. I look forward to offering this level of care to both existing and new patients alike, including home visits where required. I also enjoyed the ethos and attitude at the practice when I first joined, and as a co-incidence I love cake too!!!”

Sam Eaton

Sam is our practice manager (and Colin’s long-suffering wife!) and she oversees all the administration, HR, accounts, PAYE, VAT, and goods in and out. Sam joined the practice in 2008 and together with Colin built it up to be a leading provider of Hearing Healthcare in East Devon. Her background is in administration since leaving school and she worked for a large Solicitors for 25 years in the finance/accounts department as a senior legal cashier, she left that position to join Colin at the Centre in Honiton. Being a hearing aid user herself, she knows firsthand some of the problems, and she quite often is asked for advice on various issues from cleaning to connecting to mobile phones and is always happy to help if she can.

Sam is an active Girl Guide leader, and recently celebrated some 25 years in that role. She also enjoys keeping fit, sewing, knitting, travelling, the outdoors and keeping Colin in order – especially when he takes all the cake!

Sam Says: “I am really proud of the business that Colin and I have built up since I joined in 2008, and am looking forwards to expanding the practice further with Andy going forwards”

Sharon Mortimer

Is our Patient Care Coordinator and is usually the first point of contact at the practice, thanks to her, the clinicians are in the right place at the right time, she runs the diaries, answers the phones and ensures all the client records are up-to-date and GDPR compliant.

Sharon joined us from a large multi-national telecom company, so her organization, computer and telephone skills are first rate, and is an absolute asset to us.

Sharon in her spare time likes to bake – so the team here are often subjected to “cake” experiments which are usually fantastic! She also enjoys walking, and crafting and regularly makes small presents for her family and friends. Her happy nature makes her really approachable, so when you phone or call in, we know you are in great hands.

Sharon says: “when I first joined the team I was looking for a more sociable environment, both for me as a team player and with the clients I was serving, my previous role was always fast paced and you never really got the chance to stop and talk to people – this role is great and I can talk to people as they phone or book in -I love my job here!!”

Karen Hayes

Karen is the Hearing Care Assistant and wax removal specialist at the practice. Having worked as a nurse for 25 years, she joined us in late 2022, and brings a breadth of knowledge of patient care to her role here. She has qualified as a Hearing Care Assistant and enhanced her NHS wax removal qualification from Rotherham with an advanced irrigation and micro suction qualification at the end of 2022.

Karen in her spare time enjoys “Park Runs”, cold water swimming, walking, and eating cake, the latter helping her to fit right in at the Centre! Her natural bubbly, caring attitude has made her a real asset to the Centre and she is looking forwards to meeting new and old clients alike.

Karen says: “I applied for the job because I had been trained to remove earwax on the NHS, and really enjoyed the work, when Andy and Colin explained they wanted to train me further I leapt at the chance, and I thoroughly enjoy helping people to hear and working as part of the Honiton Hearing Centre team”
