‘Wired UK’ Profiles Ontenna, a Sound Transmission Device Worn in the Hair

25 May 2017 09:33am

A new device developed by Fujitsu called the Ontenna, allows sound to be transmitted through vibrations and light via a hair clip to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, according to an article in Wired UK

According to the company’s website, “the concept of this device is to ‘experience sound through strands of hair, much like the whiskers of a cat can sense movements in the air.’” About 1,000 low-cost Ontenna units are scheduled to go into production later this year, according to the Wired article, and will be given to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals as part of an “extended trial.”

Fujitsu hopes to price the Ontenna around $100, though an exact amount has not yet been released.
